The Long Way Back

Three records this week, and all three of them are, in one way or another, about going back to get something.

LMajor's Deep Deadly Dub is the one to lead with. It's a small EP that does a big thing quietly: it puts jungle breaks under real dub-reggae voices and doesn't flinch away from either half. "Bun Down the Place" lets Gilsun toast over the top like the tune is a sound-system dub plate that happens to run at jungle tempo, not a jungle tune with a vocal dropped on for texture. "Be My Light" does the same trick softer, letting Amy Kisnorbo's vocal actually breathe inside the low end instead of sitting on top of it. It's the kind of record that reminds you jungle's dub lineage was never a footnote - it's the load-bearing wall. Four tracks, no filler, out now.

Monty's Classic Yeh / No Context is the opposite shape - two tracks and gone - but it's working the same instinct toward restraint. Monty's spent years moving between 140, garage, and halftime without picking a side, and this one doesn't try to resolve that argument either. It just sits in it. No context, like the title says: you get the tracks, you don't get the explanation, and that's the point.

And then there's the one we can't fully play you yet. Phyrexian EP is a return trip - the artist behind it went quiet for a stretch and is coming back to the same label that put out his first record for them, which is its own kind of vote of confidence. The title track is a sub-sonic stomper that doesn't apologize for being heavy, and the closer, "Multiple Personalities," strips everything back into something more patient and textured, the kind of track that wants to open a set rather than close one. It's not streaming yet - it lands in a week - so consider this a marker. We'll be back with it.

Three records, three ways of using restraint: one leaning into roots, one refusing to explain itself, one making you wait. None of them are trying to fill the room. That's the whole thesis this week - hold the space, don't flood it.
